"Dog Days"! Did you Know?

It's been hot around here – some days going to over 100F. And in spite of the heat, we have been spending a lot of time in our backyard – in the photo Maxdhb407182_1you see the two loves of my life – Doreen and Max. Doreen does the gardening!

While we call this hot & muggy period the “Dog Days of Summer” I have often wondered why? Max doesn’t complain, he just drinks more water. And I don't know about your area, but here in Sarnia we sure have had our share of hot days this season. But here is the good news - the "dog days" are supposed to occur during the period between July 3 and August 11. So, today is August 11th -and I have told Max that those miserable days better come to an end.

But do you know where the term "dog days of summer" comes from? I sure didn't. But thanks to Google I now have the complete scoop. You too  can find the answer here:

Why can’t I seem to motivate my team?

The answer is complex and simple at the same time, and the solution is unique for each team member:

  • Can one directly motivate another individual, or do we motivate ourselves?
  • Can a leader influence the surroundings to create a motivating atmosphere?
  • Is what motivates one person the same as what motivates another?

Generally people agree that motivation comes from within. Motives are the needs and wants that cause a person to act.

In the workplace motivation is the process of influencing a team member to act so that the organization’s goals are achieved, and the team members’ needs are satisfied. Without the later, peak performance cannot be achieved. Being aware of team members’ needs has become a widely accepted way of positively influencing team member motivation. There may be different approaches to identifying needs, but most successful team leaders find some application of this concept essential to their success.

A Real Life Coaching Experience!

For the past few days we have been discussing coaching, and its importance to peak performance. It is perhaps fitting to mention a book that was written by a successful senior executive for an international financial organization who took a year’s sabbatical to pursue outside interests.

Coachingkids_2The book is entitled Coaching Kids' Hockey: The Good, The Bad, and The Unbelievable; and is the true story of a coach and his team of eight year old hockey enthusiasts. “Starting the season as if they might never win and ending as if they might never lose, they encountered everything from cheating coaches to referees ignoring blatant fouls to red tape that would make a civil servant blush.”

However, to me its real value is that through practical and actual examples, the author reinforces the following principles, which can be applied to any coaching application:

Bridge the Skills Gap! Try Coaching!

“Eighty-one percent of the respondents to the 2005 Skill Gap Survey of the American Manufacturing Workforce (Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute, 2005) said they couldn’t find qualified workers to fill their open positions. As far as manufacturers are concerned, the skills gap is upon us,” notes Stacey Jarrett Wagner, managing director, Center for Workforce Success, at the National Association of Manufacturers. - Training and Development magazine, February 2006

Statistics like this point to the issue that organizations need to be looking at their workforce now, and in the future, for what appears to be a growing issue. Hiring right and retaining are obviously one part of the equation, but organizations need to invest in training and strategic workforce strategies that help managers understand their role as “coach.”

Images_1Can you imagine the person that comes on to the manufacturing line with absolutely no skills? How about the individual who is pulled from the front line to be a supervisor? And, what about the new executive working in an industry that is changing so fast he/she barely has the business skills to cope? This is the challenge of our fast-paced world, where employee skills shortages meet with business technology expansion, competitive overload, and monumental change.

Who needs a Coach? You do!

EliteAn elite athlete will never reach his peak potential without a coach, and neither will you! You may be good at many things, but you can improve! With someone to mentor you, or teach you better methods, or shortcuts, can move your personal or business life to the next level, and the next, and the next! Have you ever pondered a problem for a long time, only to find someone who could solve the problems quickly?

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) defines talent management as the implementation of integrated strategies or systems designed to increase workplace productivity by developing improved processes for attracting, developing, retaining and utilizing people with the required skill and attitude to meet current and future business needs.

It is essential to all organizations to not only recruit the best talent, but also retain it. One of the crucial strategies involved in effective talent management is to define competencies (knowledge, skills and attitudes) the organization needs to get the work done, and then to coach individuals toward that end. In essence, organizations need to assess the skills of their people, and then provide them with the proper training so that employees and managers are performing their jobs effectively.

Is your organization focusing on this? Are your supervisors doing all they can to coach individuals in the areas that they need to be competent? Are you matching what is needed for business results to what is being coached?

Enabling Your Potential

The path to a persons full potential is a series of peaks. Each peak attained gives one the confidence and vision to undertake new peaks or challenges. Simply put, our goal, and the goal of this Blog, is to unleash the power of people. We aim to provide people with the skills they need to achieve their personal and business goals.

We believe, like John Kotter of the Harvard Business School, that changing the behaviour of people is the most important challenge for businesses competing in the change-oriented environment of the 21st Century. Organizational success depends, more than ever before, on people working together effectively. People must communicate clearly, turn ideas into action quickly, and deliver results consistently. A clear understanding of personal strengths, and a real appreciation of the difference of others, is the foundation of organizational success.

Since 1990, Norquest Associates Inc. has been providing professional training and coaching, along with the best in resources for learning, leading and performing in the workplace. Our mission is to bring the new workplace into the 21st century by increasing performance levels and creating strategies for sustained growth. We believe that by providing individuals with quality resources and learning, they will achieve their own full potential and create success for the whole organization.

As Charles M. Schwab once said, “Everyone’s got it in him, if he’ll only make up his mind and stick at it. None of us is born with a stop-valve on his powers or with a set limit to his capacities. There’s no limit possible to the expansion of each one of us.”
